Epic Solo Voyage Chronicled
Twenty years after a historic 41-day solo sail across the Atlantic Ocean, Joseph P. Ferry announces the release of his new book, In the Middle of the Sea at the Dark of the Moon. The memoir recounts Ferry's 2006 journey reversing his father's 1929 emigration route, sailing from his own birthplace in Philadelphia to his father's hometown of Falcarragh in County Donegal, Ireland. After three attempts, Ferry successfully navigated his small sailboat, The Falcarragh, across the vast space between two fatherlands to honor his family's heritage.
A Legacy for Future Generations
While the book captures the gripping reality of a singlehanded ocean crossing, it serves primarily as a profound exploration of identity, family, and legacy. During his passage, Ferry documented the daily management of the ship while writing heartfelt letters to his infant grandchildren. The memoir weaves together these original letters, ship logs, personal reflections, and original photography of sunrises and sunsets captured during his isolated time at sea.
A Collaborative Family Project
In the Middle of the Sea at the Dark of the Moon explores the deep connections formed with the people who prepared Ferry for departure and those who welcomed him upon his arrival in Ballyness Bay. Years after the voyage, Ferry worked alongside his children and grandchildren to assemble these archived memories into a cohesive narrative. The resulting book honors the memory of the emigrant father who inspired the crossing and secures a lasting story for the grandchildren who inspired him to write it.
